    Ili River, one of the largest mountain rivers in Xinjiang, takes its beginning in eastern Mt. Tianshan.
Ili    In ancient times, Ili was part of the state of Wusun, a tributary of the Xiongnu. Wusun was replaced by Western Tujue Khnate in 552. During Tang Dynasty, Khnate was part of the Tang Empire. It became Chahetai Khnate during Yuan Dynasty. In 1949, Ili was made a special administrative area of Xinjiang, with one city and 9 counties, and was upgraded to a city in 1952.
