Tibet Diary by Zhou Yun
Thursday June 9th
It's said that in the past the Tibetan people didn't eat garlic. But nowadays they plant it, eat it, and sell it. In fact, the income of garlic growers is supposed to be pretty good.

In Yarlung Valley, land that used to grow highland barley now grows garlic. Curious about Tibet's garlic industry, I pay a visit to a garlic farm in Shannan's Neidong County.
The owner of the farm tells me that Shannan is a great place for growing garlic. There's abundant sunshine and the soil is very rich. He tells me he has nearly doubled the amount of land he devotes to garlic since last year because the crop is so profitable.

When I later visit Kersong village, a farmer named Solangdoji also tells me how profitable garlic is. He says that since last September he has so far made 50,000 RMB from selling garlic, eight times what he would make selling highland barley. Solangdoji says he's going to plant all his land with garlic next year.
