If you feel worn down by the world's hustle and bustle, Weihai is definitely the place for you!
Recognized as one of China's most beautiful costal cities, it's the perfect place to forget about your worries and find a true sense of peace and happiness.
Located at the eastern tip of Shandong Peninsula, Weihai is a well- known port and tourist city in China.
The quiet coastal city covers an area of 5,436 square kilometres and has a population of 2.5 million. Though relatively small by Chinese standards, it still takes a little under 3 hours to travel around by car.
Being an open city for less than 20 years, the environment in Weihai has been better protected than other Chinese cities. As the two-time winner of the habitant city prize awarded by the United Nations, Weihai is considered one of the most comfortable places to live in China.
The climate here is well balanced, neither too cold in winter nor scorching in summer, with clear variation of the four seasons. The average annual temperature is 12C, the annual sunshine time 2,600 hours and the annual rainfall 800 mm.
Tourism is the city's major industry. There are over 80 scenic spots, of which more than 20 are visited frequently.
Besides the beautiful natural scenery, Weihai is also famous for its historical relics. Liugongdao Island, a navy base in the Qing Dynasty, is also known as the "Never-sinking Warship" for its strategic importance. In fact, Liugongdao played a significant role in the the Sino-Japan (Jiawu) War and was the site of a major battle.
