There is a 30-kilometer-long underground city in Beijing that is open only to foreigners.
The entrance to the underground city is located down an alleyway in the Qianmen area. The city is 8 meters below ground and can accommodate over 300 thousand people. There are many amusement facilities in the underground city including cinemas, beauty salons and even a silk factory. Tiananmen Square, the Forbbiden City and the railway station are all accessible from the underground city.
The underground city was a bomb shelter before being renovated in 1979.
Recently, some residents have begun questioning why the underground city is open only to foreigners.
