 Its population is 37 ,920,000. The province is vast in its territory with abundant resources. It has four distinct seasons. Its cultue varies with different nationalities. The touri sm resources have its unique features and ice and snow resources are noted as nu mber one in China. The forests cover an area of 190,000 sq. km, 41.9% of the pro vince's territory. With such natural environment, it is suitable for forest tour ism. There are many rivers crisscrossing the province, such as the Heilongjiang River, the Songhua River, the Ussuri River and the Nen River. There are also lar ge lakes like Jingpo Lake and Wudalianchi China Lakes.
There are rich cultures a nd customs with different nationalities with a long history. The sites of the Bo hai Kingdom in Tang Dynasty, Huining capital and Longquan capital of Jin Dynasty have been well preserved. Along the two border rivers, Heilongjiang and Ussuri, tours between China and Russia are among our major products. Harbin, Daqing, yi chun and many other cities are characterized with unique Northern China scenery. Beautiful mountains and valleys, forests and grasslands, wetlands, rivers and l akes are good resources for ecotourism. The Northeast Tiger Zoo, the Home of Redª²crested cranes, the Arctic light and crater forests, and industrial and agricu ltural tourism resources such as largeª²sized factories, largeª²sized farms and largeª²sized oil fields add to our abundant tourism resources with special chara cteristics.
Since the openª²up policy was adopted, especially during the ninth "fiveª²year " plan, tourism has achieved very rapid development, and all elements required for tourism products have become available in sizable scales. Now 65 domestic ai r routes have been opened up and 6 international air routes have linked Harbin w ith Japan, Korea, Russia, Hong Kong and other countries. There are also deluxe b us routes leading from Harbin to 15 cities, such as Heihe, Jiamusi, Qiqihar, Mud anjiang, Jixi and Suifenhe. At present, In Heilongjiang Province, there are 238 travel services in operation, including 51 international travel services and 193 domestic travel services. There are 130 tourism (star) hotels and many other ho tels (without stars) available to tourists.
 In the past few years, the status of tourism industry in Heilongjiang Province h as been clarified, and a series of polices have been made to bring out initiativ es from all walks of life for tourism develoment. Tourist resorts have been deve loped and improed in Yabuli, Jingpohu, Wudalianchi and other areas. More than 10 0 new attractions have been made in the Sun Island, the Erlong Mountains, the No rtheast Tiger Zoo, the Tao Mountain, the Yuquan Mountain, the Chain Lakes, Zhalo ng, the Xinkai Lake and many other areas. Ice and snow tours, forest tours, wetl and tours, grassland tours, special geographic tours, hunting tours and ecoª²tou rs have become main products with border tours, northern ethnic custom tours, an d northern city scenic tours as supplementary tourist products.
