The story of the "Lotus Lantern," is fondly known as one of the most popular of all Chinese fairytales. It is about a child who saved his mother through out numerous hardships.

Sanshengmu, a female deity, fell into love with a mortal intellectual named Liu Yanchang. Disregarding her brother Erlang god's objection, Sanshengmu goddess eloped from the Heaven with the lotus lantern to marry Liu Yanchang in mortal world.

Seven years had passed, Chenxiang, their son, grew up gradually and lived a happy life with his mother.One day, unfortunately, Erlang god found them through the light of lotus lantern. To defend the rules of Heaven, he caught Chenxiang to coerce Sanshengmu into handing over the lotus lantern. Sanshengmu could not help but hand the lantern over, and she was pressed under the Huashan Mountain.

In Heaven, Chenxiang got to know his lot accidentally from the god of earth. with the help of another hostage Gamei, who was the daughter of a tribe head, Chenxiang wrested his mother's lotus lantern. Finally, he escaped from the Heaven.

On the perilous journey, ghost city, barren desert, snowslide, earthquake, etc. could not wear away his determination for saving his mother.

Experienced various hardships, little Chenxiang grew up into a brave young man with the power of both god and human being.

The Monkey King was greatly moved by Chenxiang's inflexibility. Following the direction of Monkey King, Chenxiang went to Huashan Mountain with his friends.

He made a magical axe by which he fought with Erlang god, and made him unable to hold his own. During the fight, Erlang god carried out several venomous schemes in order to put Chenxiang to death, but at last Chenxiang defeated Erlang god and save his mother from the bottom of the Huashan Mountain with the miraculous power of the lotus lantern.
