After Beijing, the opera will travel to Shanghai, Seoul and Vienna.
Peach Blossom Fan, written by Confucius' descendant Kong Shangren in 1699, tells the love story of the late Ming Dynasty singer Li Xiangjun and the scholar Hou Fangyu. The fan in Peach Blossom Fan is a present from Hou to his love.
The story of the separation and reunion of the lovers allowed the author to dwell on his feelings about the rise and fall of the Ming Dynasty, and also to evoke numerous distinctive images, especially of some of the characters who influenced China's history.
The present production strictly follows Kong's original work. It is directed by Tian Qinxin. Taiwan poet Yu Kwang-chung is the play's writing consultant, the general director of the opening ceremony of the 2002 World Cup, Korean director Sohn Jin-chaek, is stage consultant and the production also features the work of the Japanese composer Seiko Nagaoka and the Jiangsu Kunqu Troupe.
The total investment in the production is more than 6 million yuan.
The last performance in Beijing will be staged at Poly Theater tonight at 7:30pm.
