With the western Valentine's Day just around the corner, Beijing People's Art Theatre is putting on several dramas especially for young lovers.
"Lover" and "I Love Love"are to be staged at RenYi Mini-Theatre and Oriental Pioneer Theatre, respectively, on February 14th.
"Lover" was adapted from the absurdist works written by famous British playwright Harold Pinter, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in October 2005 at the age of 75. Xu Ang, the youngest director in RenYi's history, brings us this year's presentation of the drama. It depicts the story of a British middle-class couple dealing with extra-marital affairs. The wife blatantly informs her husband of her disloyalty to their marriage, while we watch the husband respond first with dignified silence, and later rage. The drama reveals deeper expressions of human sub-consciousness, although in somewhat shocking forms.
The modern, philosophical drama "I Love Love" focuses on the theme of love and idealism, revealing the young characters' struggle between reality and their desire for perfection. The stage performance brings the audience through not only the pleasures and pains of love relationships, but also reflections on life. This play might be a bit of a heavy theme for Valentine lovers, so in order to add warmth and romance to the atmosphere, RenYi Theatre plans to dole out 100 bouquets of roses to the audience on that special day.
