Germany Ready to Continue Diplomatic Efforts with Iran
2006-1-14 4:37:49    CRIENGLISH.com
The German government rejects any military action against Iran over its resumption of nuclear activities, preferring to continue diplomatic efforts to settle the issue, a Foreign Office spokesman said in Berlin on Friday.

The spokesman, Martin Jaeger, said even if foreign ministers of the European Union troika, Germany, France and Britain, decide to refer Iran to the UN Security Council, the EU side would still be willing to hold dialogue with Tehran on condition that it halts its latest nuclear research.

Possible economic sanctions against Iran were not the current consideration of the German government, Jaeger said, adding it was too early to discuss the topic.

He said the German government was dedicated to "taking into the same boat" other nations to solve the problem, referring to a special meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue to be held next week in London.

Foreign ministers of the EU troika and EU chief diplomat Javier Solana held a special meeting in Berlin on Thursday to discuss to Iran's resumption of nuclear research.

They called for an emergency session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to vote on whether to refer Iran to the UN Security Council, which could impose economic sanctions on the Islamic republic.
