Security Alert at Manchester Airport
2005-9-23 21:58:18    CRIENGLISH.com
Police arrested a man under anti-terrorism laws on Friday at Manchester Airport in England.

Greater Manchester Police said the man had been seen acting suspiciously in the area where aircraft were parked.

The British Broadcasting Corporation reported that a man with a suitcase had been seen walking under an aircraft.

The incident disrupted traffic at the busy airport, and portions of two terminals were closed for a time, but flights were returning to normal by late Friday morning.

Some passengers were affected when the airport was partially closed while a bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion.

"We were told that there had been a bomb scare in Terminal One. Told that there was a package left on the runway itself, whether it was true or not nobody knows, but obviously it has caused havoc to the infrastructure and the closure of the Terminal One."

Police said the man was being interrogated at a police station.

Also on Friday, a man charged with attempting to bomb the London Underground system made his first court appearance, a day after being extradited from Italy.

Three other men have been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to murder over the London attacks on July 21.
