Al-Qaida Claims Killing of Egyptian Envoy

Al-Qaida in Iraq says it has killed Ihab el-Sherif, Egypt's ambassador to Iraq.

The militant group made this announcement in an online statement, posting a video of the blindfolded diplomat.

The claim's authenticity could not immediately be confirmed.

Sherif is so far the highest profile Muslim hostage in Iraq.

Al Qaeda's Iraq wing, led by Jordanian Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, earlier issued photographs of personal documents as proof it held Sherif, snatched off a street on Saturday.

Sherif's abduction was the first strike in what appears to be a campaign against diplomats in Baghdad, at a time when the U.S.-backed government is trying to persuade Muslim states to upgrade still-tentative ties.

Pakistan withdrew its ambassador from Baghdad on Tuesday after his motorcade was attacked by gunmen. Hours earlier the envoy from Bahrain was shot in the hand in his car during an apparent abduction attempt.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have called on other countries not to pull their diplomats out of Baghdad as Al Qaeda threatens more strikes on embassies.
