Mbeki: No Third Term Presidency
2005-7-4 15:15:54    CRIENGLISH.com
South African President Thabo Mbeki says that the African National Congress (ANC) has ruled out the possibility of revising the constitution, allowing him to seek a third term.

At the closing session of the ruling African National Congress, he said he cannot seek a third term in 2009 when his second term ends.

The South African president said that although the South African constitution was approved by his ruling party, in turn the ANC cannot revise the constitution despite an overwhelming majority in South Africa's parliament.

Mbeki said the ruling party and South African people would choose someone they trust to become President and the party leader.

He predicts that a younger leadership would be preferable and that would not become clear until the national party congress in 2007.
