More than 50 world leaders, including Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President George W. Bush joined Russian President Vladimir Putin and war veterans from all over the world at the Monday event.

In his keynote speech, Putin said Russia will always remember the support of the United States and European allies in defeating Nazism.

The leaders will also attend wreath-laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and attend a reception at the Kremlin.

Throughout Russia, parades and concerts are also being held to mark 60 years since the end of World War II.

The Soviet Union fought many of the decisive battles of the war, losing about 27 million of its soldiers and citizens.

Recently, European countries have launched a variety of activities to honor the victory or pay homage to the victims of the war.
