UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has welcomed the joint statement issued by India and Pakistan.

In a statement released by a UN spokesman, Annan warmly supported the efforts by India and Pakistan to advance the ongoing dialogue.

Annan welcomed the joint statement issued by the leaders of the two countries this weekend which outlined additional confidence building measures aimed at achieving durable peace in the region.

Annan is particularly encouraged by their declaration that the dialogue had become "irreversible".

On Monday, India and Pakistan issued a joint statement in New Delhi saying the peace process between the two neighbors is now irreversible.
