Russian Parliament Approves Sending Peacekeepers to Sudan
2005-12-28 10:54:07    CRIENGLISH.com
Russia's upper house of parliament approved President Vladimir Putin's proposal to send peacekeeping troops to Sudan on Tuesday.

Putin had written to the Federation Council, the chamber authorized by law to decide on sending troops abroad, to ask for parliamentary approval of using Russian troops in the UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan following a request from the UN secretary general.

The Russian military contingent will include 200 troops, four transport and military helicopters and other equipment.

The UN Security Council decided in March to send 10,700 peacekeepers to southern Sudan to monitor a cease-fire agreement ending a two-decade civil war between the government and rebels.

Sending Russian troops to Sudan will be of "fundamental importance" to restoring peace and stability in the north African country, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said, quoted by the Interfax news agency.

Russia has always advocated reconciliation in Sudan, he said.
