US Government Spied on Muslim Communities
2005-12-25 19:54:35    CRIENGLISH.com
The US government reportedly has a top secret program in at least six cities to monitor the homes, workplaces and mosques of Muslims for signs of nuclear radiation.

It says up to 120 Muslim sites in the Washington area, and more in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Detroit and Las Vegas, have been regularly monitored for radiation.

The report says the monitoring has been conducted for more than three years over concerns about nuclear terrorism following the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, expressed his concern over the situation.

"The Muslims seem to be the prime target for this programme, but I think this is a sad situation in the way our resources as a country where they have been spent and the priorities of the nation seem to be messed up, because this administrations seems to be clueless when it comes to issues of security and terrorism linking that with the Muslim community."

The revelation of the surveillance program has come just days after The New York Times disclosed that the Bush administration spied on suspected terrorist targets in the United States without court orders.

President Bush has said he approved of the program in order to protect Americans from attack.
