2005-11-28 20:16:53
An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale has leveled the village of Zirang together with six other villages in southern Iran, killing 10 people and injuring 70.

The epicentre of the quake was in the waters of the Persian Gulf between the port city of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island.

The earthquake cut communication links between the mainland and Qeshm Island, which is some 1,500 kilometres south of Iran's capital city Tehran.

Qeshm Island's airport sustained minor damage and part of a major hospital collapsed from the force of the quake.

The governor of Qeshm Island, says that rescue teams have been deployed to the affected areas.

The head of an Iranian Red Crescent rescue unit said two helicopters were evacuating the injured from Qeshm.

Colonel Alipoor,a spokesman for the Iranian police, warned on national television that plans were in place to stop looting.

"In order to prevent any possible action by looters, all movements of household effects must be done with the permission of the governor's office, the police and the Unexpected Events Committee on the island. ̄

The earthquake was felt in nearby nation of Oman and in the United Arab Emirates.
