Russia Tuesday test-fired a new Topol intercontinental ballistic missile, whose warhead successfully hit a scheduled target, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
The international ballistic missile launched at 8:10 p.m. Moscow time (1710GMT) from the Kapustin Yar training range well and truly hit a target on the Balkhash training range in Kazakhstan.
"The intercontinental ballistic missile was fired from a ground-based launcher under a research and development program," a source of the Russian Defense Ministry was cited as saying.
"The target was precisely hit. The test launch confirmed the high flight and technical characteristic of the missile", the source said.
The launch and flight of the missile were closely watched by Russia's Space Forces.
According to the source, the new generation of Topol missiles based in silos and mobile launchers will make up the core of the Strategic Rocket Forces after the year 2015 and will remain on duty at least until the year 2040.
The advanced Topol missile has no foreign analogs, experts said.It has three cruise engines and can develop hypersonic speed. The high thrust-to-weight ratio allows the warhead to maneuver on the trajectory and pass through a dense air defense system.
