Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has nominated Yulia Tymoshenko to be the country's prime minister in a letter to parliament.

Tymoshenko is currently the acting prime minister and all criminal cases against her have been closed.

Prosecutor General Svyatoslav Piskun told a news conference on Friday that the acting prime minister had committed no crimes.

44-year-old Tymoshenko had been accused of smuggling gas and of forgery when she headed a private gas trading company in the mid-1990s. She denied the charges.

Piskun was prosecutor general when the charges against her were being investigated.
