A Chinese expert has called on the well-off children to work as volunteers in poor rural and mountainous areas in the country, saying it will benefit their growth, according to a Beijing newspaper.
The Beijing News reported Friday that Professor Lu Xueyi from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences made the comment at the first seminar on community volunteers.
He suggested that China's Ministry of Civil Affairs and Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League should mobilize children from well-off families to experience real life of people in the countryside and remote mountainous regions, just as wealthy Chinese businesses and entrepreneurs have answered government calls to contribute to charity causes in rural China.
The well-known social study scholar said such a move would benefit well-off children's growth.
The volunteer schemes would also ease rising tension between the rich and the poor, in a bid to improve the social role of the wealthy, he added in his speech at the seminar in Beijing.
Professor Lu pointed out that some children from rich and senior officials' families have committed crimes as they were raised poorly by their parents.
He warned that children born with silver spoons often lack the strong will to overcome difficulties in face of hardships amid the increasing drive for pleasure and luxury in their daily lives.
Such negative influence can be easily understood from the famous Shijia Primary School in the Chinese capital Beijing's downtown East District, he cited, quoted by the newspaper, saying the traffic near the school always becomes jammed during rush hour as people bring their children to school in luxury cars such as Mercedes-Benzs and BMWs.
He added the volunteer work by well-off children to help those less fortunate would help them discover their appropriate roles in the society.
