Addressing a special seminar for the day, Kuomintang chairman Lien Chan stressed the importance of respecting history.
"Our seminar today is not a big one, but I think it is of great significance. One thing we should do is to respect history. Only when one begins to respect history, can one become a pragmatic person, and only when a government does so, can it become a pragmatic government."
Besides the seminar, Kuomintang chairman candidate Ma Yingjeou, who is also the mayor of Taipei city, on Thursday attended another meeting to commemorate the 60th anniversary of victory in the anti-Japanese war.
"When the war broke out, no one knew when it would end, how many people would die, how it would change the world. But no one hesitated to dedicate their lives to it."
In addition to the meetings, another Kuomintang office holder Wang Jing-ping also marked the day by paying tribute to the sculpture of Sun Yat-sen in Taipei, who is the founding father of modern China.
