China Protests against Japan Expeling Chinese Fishermen
2005-6-21 22:09:31      CRIENGLISH.com
China has called on Japan to respect the rights of Taiwan fishermen and follow the fishing accords signed between the two governments.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jiaochao made the call at Tuesday's regular press conference, when asked to comment on the latest fishing row between Japan and its neighbors.

In recent weeks, Taiwan fishing boats have reportedly being chased off, expelled or even detained by Japanese patrol boats in the disputed East China Sea.

Liu Jianchao urged Japan to resolve the issue quickly through negotiations.

"The Chinese government has always attached the utmost importance to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese fishermen, including those from Taiwan. Since China and Japan signed the fishing accords years ago, which give detailed stipulations about fishing in the area, we hope the provisions of these agreements will be implemented."

The spokesman also reaffirmed the claim that the waters, near the Diaoyu Islands, are Chinese territory.
