Sanmenxia Dam Controls Yellow River Floods
2005-6-1 3:09:55
Samenxia Dam controls floods in the lower and middle reaches of Yellow River over the past nearly five decades.

During the recent visit to the dam, an official told our tour group that the dam is intended to preventing flood along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, ensuring the safety of Xi'an, the capital of northwest Shaanxi Province and Zhengzhou, the capital of central Henan Province as the dam is located between the two key cities.

The official said there are four months every year the dam is only used for preventing flood and does not generate electricity.

The multi-functions dam, of which building started in 1957, is also responsible for generating electricity and irrigating plants.

The damn also created a wetland, which has become a nesting ground for swans between about October and March
