General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Hu Jintao says talks across the Taiwan Straits can resume as long as the leader of Taiwan accepts the one-China principle embodied in the "1992 Consensus".
In a historic meeting with Chairman of Taiwan's opposition People First Party James Soong Thursday in Beijing, Hu Jintao stressed that no substantive results can be achieved without the one-China principle. He said any topics can be discussed under this principle.
He also called on the Taiwan authorities to remove various discriminatory restrictions on the mainland and adopt practical measures to facilitate direct mail service, trade, air and shipping services across the Straits. He says this is necessary for cross-Straits personnel exchanges and economic prosperity of both sides.
He also called on people on both side of the Taiwan Straits to enhance mutual understanding. He said the mainland understands and respects Taiwan compatriots and will take practical measures to promote mutual trust.
In response, James Soong says the People First Party adheres to the one-China principle, opposes "Taiwan Independence" and works for peace across the Straits.
