Visiting Chairman of People First Party James Soong has reiterated that his party is resolutely opposed to forces for "Taiwan independence".

Soong says "independence" is a dead end and will create instability across the Taiwan Straits.

Soong made the remarks during an address to the faculty of Beijing-based Qinghua University, which was broadcast live around the country.

The PFP Chairman says that solving the cross straits problem requires greater understanding from people on both sides and putting the people's interests first.

James Soong also encouraged people on both sides of the straits to be patient.

General Secretary Hu Jintao of the CPC Central Committee is scheduled to meet with Soong and his delegation on Thursday to exchange views on cross-straits relations.

Beijing is the last stop of Soong's mainland visit, which has already taken him to Xi'an, Nanjing, Shanghai and Hunan.
