By Monday night, Rescuers have recovered 21 bodies of the missing in a major bus accident from an ice-covered river in north China, local government said.
The six other missing might be swept downstream of the river and they were not possible to survive from the freezing water after two days, said rescuers.
A bus with 35 passengers and one driver aboard suddenly fell into the Yellow River while driving on the frozen surface at the section of the Hanggin Banner (prefecture) in Ordos City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at about 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
Nine people, six male and three female, escaped from the sinking bus and were rescued, said Zhang Gui, vice mayor of the Ordos City.
The bus was salvaged on Monday morning and rescuers found 20 bodies in the vehicle.
Initial investigation shows that the cave-in of the "icy road" caused the 29-seat bus to sink into the river, according to local police.
The local government has mobilized a team of armed police officers, 20 firemen, six divers and 20 emergency vehicles to rush to the scene for rescue and salvage earlier on Sunday.
The Bayannur City Branch of the PICC Property and Casualty Co. Ltd. has sent staff to the scene to handle compensation affairs.
