China Publicizes Number of Gays

The gay community in China numbers somewhere between five and ten million people.

The People's Daily reports the gay community in China numbers somewhere between 5 and 10 million people, of whom more than 1% are HIV positive. This is the first time that China has officially publicized figures for the number of gay people in the country.

Medical experts say gay people are the second most susceptible to HIV infection after drug users, as they often have multiple sex partners and unprotected sex.

Now education on AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, specifically targeting gay people, has begun in many places across China, and free tests are being provided.
