AIDS prevention is no longer the business of doctors. In Shanghai, a number of student societies are becoming active in promoting AIDS prevention to the public. CRI's Shanghai correspondent Wang Jing has more.
Just a week ago, in an AIDS prevention program, free condom delivery was encountered with some setbacks in renowned Tsinghua and Peking universities. Many students looked away from the sight of condoms in public.

But not every student thinks the same: to mark World AIDs Day, many college students in Shanghai are teaming up to deliver condoms and pamphlets about AIDS to passers-by on the street. They are from various AIDs societies in universities. Lin Jiawen is one of them.

"I'm a freshman. I've chosen the selected course of AIDs and I also got enrolled in the AIDs society in our university. Today I come here as a volunteer. I think my study could help me properly prevent the disease, and I'll share the knowledge to friends and people around me."

The first students' AIDs society in Shanghai was set up in 1998 in the Shanghai No.Two Medical University, where a concept of companion education on AIDS was introduced from Australia. It was soon promoted to many other universities. Lin Jiawen again.

"We do invite teachers to our society, but in most cases, it is our senior students who share the AIDs knowledge with us and we are expected to carry the mission on."

An important responsibility of the AIDs societies is to teach: the volunteer groups, which are mainly made up of freshmen and sophomores, give regular AIDs lessons to middle school students. The Shanghai No.Two Medical University alone has given AIDs lessons to 32 middle schools in the city.

He Yuan is the head teacher of the volunteer group from the Shanghai No.Two Medical University, where AIDS teaching to middle schools has been enlisted in their credit system.

"To junior middle school students, we tell them some relevant physiological knowledge and the right attitude towards love, and to the elder students, we will inform them of the safe sexual behavior and sexual psychology. Through the education on the causes and ways of infection, we are also trying to eliminate the discrimination against AIDs patients."

Getting more people involved in AIDS prevention is actually what the World AIDs Day is calling for. In a public promotion for AIDs prevention, China's famous actor, also the AIDs prevention and publicity ambassador, Pu Cunxin gives the following remarks.

"It is of great importance to promote AIDs prevention among healthy people, it is related to everyone, and it's everyone's right to know about the knowledge and promote the knowledge."
