South China's Guangzhou is extending a programme to help primary and high school students develop healthy habits.

Chen Zhaorong, an official with the Guangzhou Bureau of Education, says some students' unhealthy habits, such as smoking and lack of physical exercise, hinder their psychological and physical development.

Health authorities in the area are partiularly concerned about the levels of smoking at schools, with one-in-five students admitting to smoking cigarettes.

Early last year, Guangzhou launched a programme of health education in 11 pilot primary and middle schools, and will now extend that program to more schools in the city.

The programme was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

China introduced the programme in 1995 and has moved to implement it across the nation in recent years.
