Many Chinese still lack basic knowledge of AIDS, according to a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in China's major cities.

The survey, conducted among people aged 18 to 60, showed that most people do not have a correct understanding of how the disease spreads: Only 33 percent of those interviewed knew that coughing or mosquito bites won't lead to HIV infection.

In addition, 43 percent of the interviewees never use condoms when they are having sex, and only seven percent use them frequently.

Officials say China still has a long way to go on AIDS education and the use of condoms.

China now has approximatedly 840,000 HIV carriers, of whom 80,000 have developed AIDS.
