The Beijing Health Department says since 1998 the number of AIDS patients in Beijing has been increasing by an average of 40 percent every year.

Guan Baoying, the Vice Chief from the Health Department's Control Disease Office says 70 percent of the patients are between 20 and 40 years old.

She says AIDS education, particularly for young people, is essential to prevent the spread of AIDS. One project "Pay Attention Woman and Prevent AIDS" has been devised by Beijing's Prevention and Cure AIDS Committee. It includes an awareness program promoting the use of condoms through billboards, like the ones that have been put up in the nightclub district in Beijing's Sanlitun Road.

Also, citizens can dial hotline 800-610-6500 for free AIDS consultation.
