Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is popularizing the use of condoms in its capital Urumqi, in an effort to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Lin Quanyi, an official from the autonomous region's Family Planning Commission, says all 124 communities in the city's Tianshan District will be equipped with condom vending machines, and shops specially for selling condoms will also be established.

A recent survey showed only five percent of the women of childbearing age in Xinjiang use condoms.

The province detected its first HIV case in 1995 and by the end of 2003, the number of HIV carriers in the autonomous region had soared to 8,153.
