No single genre dominates our list because we want to concentrate our attention on both mainstream and independent cinema. Though I have to admit, this edition weighs heavily on the mainstream side of things; regardless, they're good films that are worth a watch. And we're not going to offer you a top 10 list either; rather, will give you a personal look at what we think are some of 2004's best films. In this edition, we've chosen three movies for the digest. 1.Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11We've got six clips waiting to give you a glimpse of the movie and Michael Moore's documentary techniques. Act 1 "Vacation" clipIt is about President Bush's ill-timed vacation just before 9/11 event. Act 2 "Patriot Act" clipWhen Michael Moore found out that members of the US Congress didn't actually read the Patriot Act before passing it, he decided to read the controversial Act to Congress by himself.
Act 3 "Congress" clipBelieve it or not, Michael Moore really did attempt to have members of Congress enlist their children into the military to help fight the war in Iraq. But there are, of course, disagreements. You check it out. Act 4 "Pose No Threat" clipMichael Moore also reveals that American soldiers did not want to fight the war in Iraq. Here, Moore talks to Corporal Abdul Henderson of the US Marine Corps who refuses to go back to Iraq. Act 5 "I Will Take that as a Yes"Moore also shows that the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States is ambiguous and critical. In the following clip, a member of the secret service interrupts Moore and his film crew while they are standing across from the Saudi Arabian Embassy.
2. Roland Emmerich¡¯s big-budget disaster movie "The Day After Tomorrow".
This movie takes a look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age.
Also, global climate change warnings have had a much larger impact over the last few weeks, especially after the tsunami disaster shook the very foundations of many South Asian countries. Clip from "The Day After Tomorrow". P.S. People around the world are opening their wallets to donate to tsunami relief efforts. But I think we still need to call for more help to be given to the victims of the disaster. (More Tsunami disaster details and Ways to help )
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
It stars Jim Carry and Kate Winslet and tops most critics' best lists of 2004.It is the story of a guy named Joel (Carrey), who discovers that his long-time girlfriend, Clementine (Winslet), has undergone an experimental psychiatric procedure, which causes the girl to lose all memory of Joel.
