The NBA started the new season with defending champions Detriot Pistons overpowered Houston Rockets 87-79.
Rasheed Wallace led the offensive with 24 points and other starters played well enough to score in double figures before a sellout crowd at the Palace.

The Pistons kept Rockets' 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming and league scoring champion Tracy McGrady in check.

Chinese star center Yao, playing with a bad elbow, had seven points and 10 rebounds.

McGrady made his Rockets debut with 18 points, shooting 6-for-18 from the field.

In other action, the Lakers defeated the Nuggets 89-78, with all-star player Kobe Bryant contributing 25 points.

Dallas Mavericks cruised over Sacramento Kings 107-98 to celebrate their 100th consecutive win on home court. Dirk Nowitzki contributed 33 points and 11 rebounds.
