The NBA tips off its new season as the defending champions, the Detriot Pistons, overpowered the Houston Rockets 87-79.

Rasheed Wallace led the offensive, scoring 24 points while other starters did well enough to score in double figures before a sellout crowd at the Palace.

The Pistons kept Rockets' 7-foot-6 Yao Ming and league scoring champion Tracy McGrady in check.

Yao, playing with a bad elbow, had seven points and 10 rebounds.

McGrady made his Rockets debut with 18 points, shooting 6-for-18 from the field.
