Maria Sharapova overcame an injured Serena Williams to lift the WTA Tour Championships trophy.

Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova overcame an injured Serena Williams to lift the WTA Tour Championships trophy.

Sharapova fought back from an the early third-set mental lapse and downed the American 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a contest lasting one hour 46 minutes.

The victory makes the 17-year-old Russian move to a career-high number four in the world rankings.

She also became the first champion from Russia and only the second player to win the title on her debut at the event.

Sharapova stunned Williams for the Wimbledon title in July, propelling the blond teenager to international stardom. She finished the year with five titles.
