Hong Kong health authorities are carrying out investigations into possible beef imports from banned countries.

Some retailers are suspected of buying beef from Canada, which is on the government blacklist, due to its outbreak of mad cow disease.

Although the results have not yet been confirmed, York Chow, Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Bureau in HK, reminds people to check the source when they buy imported beef.

"Given the fact that it's hard to detect the imports when they are in small amount, you should at least make sure of the country of origin, and have some knowledge about the food conditions there."

But the health official indicates possibility of resuming beef imports from Canada if further investigation finds its export safe.

Hong Kong has been implementing the control on beef import from Japan, US and Canada for fear of the deadly virus since 2001.
