A China-developed AIDS vaccine has started preliminary clinical testing with government approval.

Officials from the State Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that the test aims to study the safety of the vaccine. Its effects remain unknown until long-term and strict tests are conducted.

Chinese medical experts first started researching the vaccine in 1996.

At present, the vaccine has been tested on 30 volunteers. The clinical testing will be carried out in China's south-west province of Guangxi.
