A magnitude-6.7 earthquake rocked a large swathe of Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Tuesday, shaking buildings and causing panic.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The government meteorological officials said the quake struck off the west coast of the island Tuesday morning and was "strongly felt".

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 6.7 quake was centred 200 kilometres west of the Sumatra town of Sibolga, over one thousand kilometres northwest of Jakarta.

Earthquakes have struck the region regularly since a monster 9.1 magnitude earthquake on December 26th that triggered a tsunami, killing more than 176,000 people in Indonesia and 10 other countries across the Indian Ocean.
