European Union and United Nations officials have called on the international community to increase their aid efforts to accelerate the pace of rebuilding work in areas devastated by south Asia's tsunami six months ago.

Luxembourg cooperation minister Jean-Louis Schiltz, whose country holds the European Union's rotating presidency, said the international community has not done enough to help the reconstruction work and only nine percent of the EU funds for reconstruction had been paid out.

UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and relief coordinator Jan Egeland called for an early warning system to be set up that would help minimize destruction from future tsunamis.

In a related development, Sri Lanka's government signed a long-awaited pact to share three billion US dollars worth of tsunami aid with the Tamil Tigers.

The aid deal will help speed up relief to tens of thousands of Sri Lankans still living in tents, wooden shacks and rudimentary concrete homes six months after December's tsunami killed 40,000 people along the island's shores.
