(Residents in Siberut Head to higher land after the quake)

A US-run tsunami alert center says there is no threat of massive tidal waves following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia.

Seismologists said there were no reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which hit at 5:29 pm on Sunday near Siberut Island, 109km southwest of the Sumatra town of Painan.

Two weeks earlier, an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale killed more than 600 people on the Indonesian island of Nias.
