Army Specialist Charles Graner Jr., the reputed ringleader in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse case, has been found guilty of abusing Iraqi prisoners in the first trial arising from the scandal.

The case sparked international outrage when photographs were released that showed reservists torturing and humiliating prisoners.

36-year-old Graner, the first soldier to be tried on charges arising from the scandal, was convicted on nine out of the ten charges he faced; he could now be sentenced to up to 17 1/2 years in jail.

The jury took less than five hours to reach the verdict.

Earlier, an American soldier had been sentenced one year in jail for the murder of an wounded Iraqi in Baghdad last year.

Staff Sergeant Cardenas Alban was convicted on one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to murder at a court martial.
