Related Event: Middle East After Arafat

Mahmoud Abbas has been sworn in as new chairman of the Palestinian National Authority.

Abbas called for a ceasefire with Israel in his speech, which was delivered after a swearing-in ceremony.

Interim Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council Hassan Khreisha says the council will hold a special session for Abbas' inauguration.

Arabian and foreign officials and diplomats will attend the session.
