Sharon Congratulates Abbas in Phone Call

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has called Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to congratulate him for his landslide victory in an election to replace Yasser Arafat.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has called Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to congratulate him for his landslide victory in an election to replace Yasser Arafat.

Both sides said a meeting will take place, but no date was set.

A statement from Sharon's office says Sharon congratulated Abbas "on his personal achievement and his victory in the elections and wished him luck. The statement adds they agreed they will continue talking in the near future.

However, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei said plans for a Sharon-Abbas meeting are still in an early stage.
