A report from United Nations says nearly half of adults living with HIV in the world are women.

The AIDS Epidemic Update 2004, released on Tuesday by Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS says the number of women living with HIV has risen in each region of the world in the past two years.

The report also shows the number of HIV patients reached its highest level in 2004 with an estimated 39.4 million, and over three million people died of HIV-AIDS related illnesses this year.

The sub-Saharan Africa is still the worst-affected region, with increasing number in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
