A 14-member medical team assigned by the Chinese government has arrived in Colombo to aid tsunami-hit Sri Lanka.

The team is composed of medical workers and experts on epidemics, internal medicine and orthopaedics.

Some have participated in international medical aid teams in Africa and some have had experience in fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Wang Bingqiang, head of the medical team, says the team has been geared up with sufficient medicines and medical appliances to provide medical service.

Chinese ambassador Sun Guoxiang hailed the team's courage to come to help, saying the squad will convey Chinese people's concern to the Sri Lankan people as well.

Sri Lanka's Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala de Silva expressed the gratitude to the Chinese government and the people for the aid.
