The population of the Chinese mainland will officially reach 1.3 billion by Thursday, January 6 this year.

The National Bureau of Statistics says tight controls on population expansion through family planning policies have enabled China to successfully delay reaching this figure by four years.

The bureau believes China has laid the foundations for sustainable population development and boosted the establishment of a well-off society.
