Related Event: Asian Tsunami Disaster
The Chinese government and local and overseas Chinese nationals are continuing to give donations, and Chinese medical teams are still working in tsunami-hit countries. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has suggested ways of allocating aid to tsunami-hit countries at an international conference in Geneva, attended by representative from about 100 nations. Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Shen Guofang told the conference that the international community must fulfills their commitments to the effected countries. He says the United Nations must play a leading role in coordinating the re-building of the countries, and developing countries should strengthen their own capacity for re-building. He also says aid should be stable and sustainable. Shen Guofang says China has given 130 million U.S. dollars in aid to the countries, and half of it will have arrived in the countries by the end of this month. On Tuesday, China's second rescue team of 35 members arrived at Banda Aceh. On the same day, the Hua Kiaw Poh Teck Tung Foundation, the largest charity group in Thailand, together with other charity institutions run by Chinese nationals delivered relief fund to over 900 victims.
