A Chinese expert forecasts the country's urbanization rate will reach 58 to 60 percent in 2020, with an urban population of 800 to 900 million.

Lian Yuming, president of the Beijing International Institute for Urban Development, made the prediction Wednesday at a seminar in Beijing on China's urban development.

His data shows that China's urbanization rate grew to nearly 38 percent by the end of 2002, an annual increase of one percentage point. It also indicates that 80 to 90 million farmers move to cities each year.

Prof. Lian suggests that China should promote the development of small and medium-size towns.
