China to Strengthen AIDS Prevention

China's Health Ministry is calling to strengthen AIDS prevention, especially among women.

Since last year, the ministry has carried out AIDS education work with young women in central China's Henan Province and South China's Guangdong Province.

The programs have reached more than 3 million women of childbearing age.

The ministry is now looking to spread the education campaign to newly-married couples.

Local health departments are required to provide AIDS tests and prevention information to newlyweds.

At the end of last year China had 840,000 HIV carriers.
